Many regions of New Zealand face the risk of wildfires during warmer months. If you’re driving in an area with active fire conditions, it is important to stay informed and monitor local alerts so you can keep safe and ensure your vehicle is properly prepared.

In life threatening situations call 111.

Find my phone

If you have a “Find my phone” feature on your phone, make sure it’s turned on.

Prepare your vehicle

If you frequently travel through wildfire prone areas, take time to prepare your vehicle now.

Keep 100% wool blankets in your car. They can provide protection from flames if required.
Stay up to date with regular servicing. Make sure your vehicle and all lights such as headlights, indicators, hazard lights and brake lights are working correctly.
Keep your fuel tank topped up, road closures or diversions may require you to take longer routes.
Always carry water and a first aid kit in your vehicle for emergencies.

Driving

Knowing what to do if you encounter wildfire conditions is essential.

Drivers are strongly encouraged to avoid areas impacted by fires and to keep a close eye on updates, as conditions can shift rapidly.

Staying safe on the road around wildfires

Follow the guidance of Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) and Police.
Listen to local radio for fire updates and check live traffic reports for road closures.
Avoid driving in areas where wildfires or controlled burns are taking place.
Only drive in an active wildfire area as a last resort or if officials instruct you to do so
Turn your headlights on, smoke can significantly reduce visibility for all drivers.
Ensure your vehicle has enough fuel and water. remain hydrated by drinking water on hand.
If you need to stop to reassess your route or plan a safe exit, pull well off the road and turn your hazard lights on.

If you’re caught in the path of a wildfire

Stay inside your vehicle.
Turn the engine off.
Park in a clearing away from dense bush.
Park behind a barrier such as a wall or a rocky area if possible.
Keep off the roadway and turn on your hazard lights. Smoke can make your car difficult to see.
Keep windows, doors and air vents closed.
Turn off the air conditioning and all vents.
Cover yourself with wool blankets and position yourself below window level.
Drink water regularly to avoid dehydration.
